  • Car and Truck Insurance Tips

When buying a new or used car or truck it is very important to protect your investment with the right insurance and the right coverage. There are many good companies to choose from, but you need to make sure you have the coverage you need to protect yourself and your investment.

Finding a local Insurance agent, like an agent at GLI Insurance Group, that will sit down with you and explain the coverages in plain English may be a better choice than risking an online "discount" insurance company.

Regardless of who you choose, find the best insurance coverage, for the best price. Cheap insurance is not always the best, but an independent insurance agency like GLI Insurance Group can and will shop for the best insurance, best coverage, and best price.

Here are some common sense tips to follow.

    • Make sure you meet your state's minimum insurance requirements.
    • If you currently have coverage, check the amounts you have on your car or truck. Your local insurance agent can help make an informed decision.
    • Review your policy before finalizing. If using a local insurance agency have your agent walk you through the policy.
    • Do not be afraid to ask for discounts or how to qualify for discounts.
    • Consider your financial situation and choose the right amounts and kinds of coverage. Higher deductibles are often less expensive insurance, with the same coverage but you incur a higher upfront cost if in an accident.
    • Make sure you have a clean driving record. If you have outstanding tickets etc. this can impact your cost.
    • Take a look at BBB and Google reviews of the Insurance company. Read through and see how concerns were handled.
    • Remember to cancel your old policy.
  • How much car insurance do I need?

The amount of car insurance you need depends on several factors, including your state's minimum

requirements, your driving habits, the value of your car, and your personal financial situation.

Most states require drivers to have liability insurance, which covers damages and injuries you cause to others in an accident. The minimum requirements vary by state, but it's often expressed as three numbers, such as 25/50/25, which means $25,000 per person for bodily injury liability, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury liability, and $25,000 per accident for property damage liability. In addition to liability insurance, you may also want to consider adding other types of coverage, such as:

    • Collision coverage: This covers damages to your car in the event of an accident, regardless of who is at fault.
    • Comprehensive coverage: This covers damages to your car that result from events such as theft, vandalism, or weather‐related incidents.
    • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: This covers you if you are in an accident with someone who doesn't have insurance or doesn't have enough insurance to cover your damages.

When deciding how much car insurance you need, consider the potential costs of an accident or other incidents and how much you can afford to pay out of pocket. It's also a good idea to consult with a licensed insurance agent who can provide guidance on the appropriate coverage levels for your individual situation.

  • What are Iowa’s minimum car insurance coverage laws?

In Iowa, drivers are required to carry liability insurance, which covers damages and injuries you cause to others in an accident. The minimum liability coverage required in Iowa is expressed as 20/40/15, which means:

    • $20,000 for bodily injury or death of one person in an accident caused by the insured driver.
    • $40,000 for bodily injury or death of two or more people in an accident caused by the insured driver.
    • $15,000 for property damage caused by the insured driver in an accident.

It's important to note that these are only the minimum required coverage levels in Iowa, and you may want to consider purchasing additional coverage to protect yourself in the event of an accident. For example, you may want to consider adding collision coverage, which covers damages to your car in the event of an accident, or comprehensive coverage, which covers damages to your car from non‐collision events, such as theft or weather‐related incidents.

It's a good idea to consult with a licensed insurance agent to determine the appropriate coverage levels for your individual situation.
